Tahmineh Milani, a prominent feminist filmmaker, was arrested in Iran for "insulting Islamic values" on 27 August 2001. She is accused of slandering the 1979 Islamic revolution in her film The Hidden Half. She was freed on bail a few days later. "The Hidden Half" focuses on left-wing student groups during the struggle against the Shahs regime, but who were suppressed by Islamic factions after the 1979 revolution. In an interview published the day before her arrest, she defended her film as "true", adding that 10 of her friends from that time had been executed, and others imprisoned for long periods. Milani is a well-known director with strong political and feminists beliefs. Her films, most notably "Two Women", have won international acclaim. (Sources Reuters/BBC)
