Dear Ms Fontaine
The European Council of Artists, representing artists’ organisations in 25 European countries, strongly supports the appeal of "Reporters without borders" to the European Parliament.
Against the background of examples like a newly proposed law in Austria aiming at the prosecution of journalists in certain cases and the present confusion of public and private media in Italy, the demand for a media constitution in the European Union has to be put on the agenda.
We refer to our letter concerning the Draft Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union of January 2001, pointing out that we do not consider this document to be sufficient at all. Freedom and diversity of the media and the art are at stake and should be defended with proper means.
We urge you to do whatever possible on this important matter.
